Nick Fury Producer New Jeru Ent. NYC
How do you come up with the ideas for your tracks? Sometimes I sit and vibe to old dusty vintage soul and rock records then sample hot pieces or get ideas for hot melody lines and play them over with a little personal touch. I also work with a lot of guitar, bass, horn, and keyboard players. We vibe and build tracks from scratch. I usually go off my feelings at the time. If I'm feeling mad, I'll make a furious beat. If I'm sad, I'll make a track that makes you feel like your going thru what I am. I might start a drum line, give some direction to the instrumentalist and let them do their thing. I'll record what they play into the Roland 2480, cut and paste, and there is the foundation.
A lot of my ideas are very spontaneous. I may be driving in the car with my hip hop artist/writer Don Parma and hear something on the radio that sparks an idea, next thing you know we got a hit record, that happens a lot.
How do you feel when you hear someone spittin' on your creation? When I hear someone spitting on my track I get souped up. It's probably similar to a basketball player doing a crazy dunk. But, only if the artist is spitting fire or singing a hot verse. I get chills when I hear my female R&B artist Passion singing over my tracks. Passion, out of Oakland CA, brings out the best in my music with her ghetto, R. Kelly-like singing style.
I have been in a situation where a super star rap artist did not do justice to my track. Spending the production royalties was fun but their wack lyrics and my hot track never made the album or to the public's ears. In a way, it was a relief because I wasn't associated with a wack song.
How can music change to bring it back to a level that we can be proud of? In order for music to change, we as producers and artists, have to re-examine where this form of music came from. I think it came from the streets, the Underground. The corporate world and the lust for money have made hip hop and R&B todays pop music. Although pop music is feeding my children, rather than be selfish for today, we should consider the consequences if we continue to let our music be exploited. My other female R&B artist, J.J., should be the poster girl for a music revolution. Not only is her voice phenomenal, but her positive, yet real writing style is going to change our music for the better.
And we as a people can't forget where our music came from. Back in the day it was street corner music. People were selling tapes out of trunks, partying in basements, artist were in it because they loved the music. They had to because they weren't generating the huge checks like today. I do music for the love. I have to love it in order to put up with all the bullcrap associated with this industry. I recently did a track for Dead Prez's upcoming album which is exactly the type of music we need to keep our music alive forever.
How did you come up with the name Fury? What's the meaning behind it? An old friend of mine gave me the name Fury back when I first created New Jeru Ent. because I had a quick and angry temper. I guess that's why we don't talk any more but those were my younger days. I recently added Nick, which happens to be my real name. By chance, there's a legendary comic book character named Nick Fury who used to whoop ass. So me being the reformed criminal turned business entrepreneur that I am, I turned a negative Fury into a positive Nick Fury. And just like Nick Fury, the comic book character can deliver a murderous beat down, I can lay a murderous beat down.
Who's better, Felix the Cat or Underdog? Well I'm kind of young so I never saw those cartoons. I was watching Tom & Jerry and Voltron. But I would rather be down with a dog than a cat, unless the cat is a female, like a pussy cat. Holla at ya boy!!!

EST | | I heard you speak on a panel a few weeks ago and you mentioned that you were writing a book tellin' all the new-jacks how they could come up in the game. We need more female producers in my opinion. So where can a "pussy cat" cop the ink? |
