Music: I'm forced to listen to a lot of garbage-ass music against my will. But sometimes I fall in love with music again. When that happens, I listen to the White Stripes' De Stijl, Cam'Ron's latest, Faith, Marc Anthony, and the new Nature. Also, don't bring any electronica anywhere near me. Or anything that references electronica. I'm allergic to drum&bass, jungle, techno, trance, dance, pance, all that bullshit.
All time faves: Nas, D.I.T.C., Big L, Big Pun, Biggie, the Beatnuts, Mobb Deep (especially "What's Your Poison" featuring Cormega), and Noreaga-- and that's just the hip hop. I also love Barrington Levy, Beres Hammond (the old stuff before he went crazy commercial), U-Roy, I-Roy, all the old reggae DJs from the 60s and 70s, Anita Baker, Donald Byrd (especially his mid-70s master piece Blackbyrd) and I can always cool out to John Coltrane's Ballads. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the Latin: Hector Lavoe, Bobby Valentin, Willie Colon, and the list goes on...
Movies: Wonder Boys, Training Day, Ghost World, and Bully. But I always tell folks that my favorite movie of all time is Raging Bull with Deconstructing Harry a close second.
Actors: My favorite actors are Brad Renfro, Leo Fitzpatrick, Thora Birch, Scarlett Johannsen, Steve Buscemi, and I hate Cuba Gooding Jr. though I loved Snow Dogs.
Books: I'm just coming out of a hardcore Saul Bellow phase. I tried to read everything he's ever written, his interviews, essays, and criticism. I can't explain why I was so obsessed with this crotchety Jewish writer except that he is one of the few literary geniuses still living. I also read V.S. Naipaul, Jonathan Frantzen, Theodore Dreiser. But I haven't picked up a book in about 6 months. Burnt out, I guess.
Food: Bland comfort food is my first preference, like mac and cheese or mashed potatoes with some golden brown fried chicken or fish. But sometimes I get a taste for some spicy and potent Korean food like my mama used to make. There's nothing like a good Korean barbecue.
TV Shows: Sadly, I don't have cable, so I have to content myself with watching a lot of public television, like "Now with Bill Moyers." "King of the Hill" is my absolute favorite show on TV, and I always kick myself if I miss it. And I force myself to stay up late for Conan O'Brien.
Animals: It's all about dogs even though I have a cat. She kind of acts like a dog.
Vacation spot: St. Lucia and Miami.
Color: Yellow Power
Magazines: The New Yorker (even though we kicked their butts at the ASME awards), Harpers, Elle, The New York Review of Books, Granta.
People: The love of my life, Jeff. The kick ass crew of chicas that I work with: Lizz and Jazmin. My very fair and funny boss, Shani. They make it all worth while.
Sign offs: Peace to the gods and earths.
