Sharris – Susan
Status - single with a 16 year old son (an aspiring film maker)
8 – whenever (who the hell works 9-5?) = Associate Publisher
24 hours – One hell of a tough mother (ask the boy, he’ll tell ya!), business consultant (it means that I run my mouth too much and give away shit – ha!), manager to my son’s fledgling film business, promoter, and more that I can’t think of right now.
Attended – didn’t. I did a four-year stint in the military (told you I’m a tough mother)
Quests - to instill the boy with a sense of worth (so I don’t see him later in life on t.v with his hands behind his back and a hood over his head) and to have a small but successful publishing business that will allow me to keep a home in the country with the four dogs and two turtles.
Priorities - time, time and more time
Rest In Peace Susan your family is in my familes prayers.

Just want to say to everyone here on the Crusade.....
I really look forward to getting on the board daily. You all have become a regular part of my day. I have to say, that I have established friendships with many of you.
I was honored to talk to Susan on many occasions about her magazine and she gave me great advice and insight on pursuing future goals..... She had great networking and people skills, and would absolutely hold a convo with anyone, and was always willing to help when asked......
Just wanted to get that off my chest...
Thanks Crusade |
I second that..
My prayers go out to her biological family as well as her crusade family.
Even with intense debates and harsh words- the respect is there and the relationships get stronger. As seen on this post.
Thanks for the daily cyber dialogue... I do appreciate them.
Again, my prayers go out to the family.

wow....
what a reality check .....when your "online" family & friends passing is every bit as hurtful as a loss in your "offline" family & friends??
I hope she has people that will help keep her dream alive and continue to publish her magazine....folks that not only talk a good one but are also do-ers like her deserve that much...
you live on sharris

My heart is SO heavy right now, I am distraught.
She was so inspirational and such a wonderful person. I will truly miss her spirit, positivity and humor.
I was to design her first issue of Mahogany Mag.
I am truly saddened by this.
Rest in peace sister. I will really miss you.

more cherished memories of Susan's life and her impact on everyone around her. Thank you for celebrating her contributions
EDITORS NOTE
City Limits and the Center for an Urban Future lost a dazzling colleague and dear friend on September 5. Associate Publisher Susan Harris sold ads, handled business accounts, managed payroll and helped produce the Weekly. But that's just a job description.
Much more important, she was an extraordinary human being with a life to match. The baby-faced 36-year-old was born in England, her accent still detectable in words like "rather." When she was 5, her family moved to the Bronx, and then later to Queens, where she met and married Derrick Calinda. After a stint in the Air Force and the birth of her son, James, she made her way back to the Bronx, now a single mom.
It didn't take Susan long to break into publishing. She started at Marie Claire and Harper's Bazaar, but found her niche at City Limits. She said she chose the small nonprofit over a better-paying job because she believed in our mission (and because she could wear sneakers every day). Susan's commitment to City Limits was obvious. She constantly looked for ways to boost ad sales and circulation, along with our morale. Despite an endless subway commute, she was always the first person in the office and usually the last one out.
Eventually, Susan began funneling what she learned into her own semi-secret project, Mahogany, a quarterly magazine geared toward women of color who "think, play, create, love and live outside the box." Just like her. After one issue, with virtually no advertising, she had more than 500 subscribers.
Susan and I became friends over late-night deadlines and early-morning chats, dissecting our up-and-down love lives, our jobs, our plans for the weekend--and beyond. She was a lively storyteller and thoughtful listener, quick with blunt advice. When I told her last winter that my heat was out, a space heater magically appeared at my desk. Talk of renovation brought a thick stack of Metropolitan Home magazines, lugged from the Bronx. Resolutely unsentimental, she still remembered everyone's birthdays.
Susan was also fierce, a hot mama with a dragon tattoo and a sarcastic sense of humor that spanked us all. If she didn't like something, she didn't complain, she just changed it, whether that meant trying a new hairstyle or dismantling a computer. She wasn't afraid of anything, and she wasn't willing to settle.
Susan constantly shot past limits in search of new experiences, deeper knowledge, more joy. In the final blog entry on Mahogany's web site, she writes: "There is a point in everyone's life when they come into their own... I'm not saying that publishing the magazine is an easy endeavor, in fact it is even harder now than it was several months ago-but the manner in which I operate now has a grace of its own. In the midst of chaos I am at peace."
It's a tragedy that someone who appreciated life so much didn't get more time to enjoy it. We enjoyed every minute we got to spend with her.
Susan is survived by an exceptional son, a budding filmmaker who is just as intelligent, good-looking and independent as his mother. We wish James and all of Susan's family our deepest condolences and strength going forward.

Since I am changing careers, Susan recommended looking into City Limits. I have not been on the crusade in a while so just now.. I click on the website and saw the mention of Susan passing. I thought maybe there is another Sausan Harris that worked there and let me email Ray to see if he or anyone else could verify if this is true or not.... Which led me to this posts... I met Susan and others at the meet and greet and she could not have been a nicer woman... A womena who had soo much knowledge and who was willing to help you if need be....She will be missed..
Damn life is sooo soo very short..

I just got back into town today, check the board, and see this. I really had to look about three times and read this board carefully to make sure it wasn't the same woman, but alas it is. I talked to her over pm to discuss helping her out with her magazine, since i thought the first one was really a good read. My heart and prayers truly goes out to her and her son, whom everyone can tell she adored beyond anything. I will send her son something out of my check this week.
She is someone who got to see a dream realized. Let her story inspire the rest of us too timid to step out on that ledge and take a leap to what our hearts really love doing.
God rest her soul.

Give strength, give thought, give deeds, give wealth;
Give love, give tears, and give thyself.
Give, give, be always giving.
Who gives not is not living.
The more you give, the more you live.

I'm just so sorry to hear this news. I never met Sharris but I did recieve a copy of her magazine Mahogany which was wonderful, I saw her picture on the crusade at the meet and greets and I have read many of her post. My heart definitly goes out to her son. I can definitley put myself in her son shoes because I lost my mother unexpectely when I was 12 years old. Although she was here a short time I can believe she defintiley instilled wonderful values in her son. With a loving supportive family he will get thru this. I will definitley keep her son and her family in my prayers. Life is definitley to short, but I think she was a person who lived everyday to its full potential.

May Allah (God, Jehovahm Jah, Jesus, Grandfather, or whatever title you use) bless her family and I hope her son, continues to uphold all the knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, that she instilled in him. If she was able to change one person for the better, then her journey on this planet was an important one. Also Peace and Love to my homegirl for life Ultra, I love ya mami!!! keep your head up!!!
Let's not mourn her death, but celebrate all the positive energies she brought in a physical or internet form.
