Why does it seem as though Africa is the only place where barbaric practices that harm women continue to exist?

I caught Oprah today, and while I think it's very important to inform the world of what's going on, I feel like all of these stories are about groups of people in Africa. Of course most of us, I would hope, know that this is not representative of the entire continent, it's upsetting to me that it's always portrayed as a place stricken w/ AIDS and inhumane cultural practices.

his point is that Africa is not the only place where they treat women savagely. The Middle East still condones many practices that rival certain parts of Africa. wink.gif

it's so she doesn't get sexually aroused. A long time ago (very very long time ago)...one of the reasons for circumsion was to "cut down on sexual arousal". Cutting the clitoris or sewing it up, was the female version of this. After a while, men opted to get circumcision but in a lot of Islamic (fundamentalist) countries, women still have to get their clitoris cut off or the pumpum sewn up. sad.gif

I know a girl who had hers sewn up when she was living in the Ivory Coast and then she came to America and decided to get it taken out...the problem at that time was that no doctor wanted to even touch it. She got the stitches taken off after a couple of years but it was a definite struggle for her. sad.gif
