Word To Herbert
Bonjour mes amis. C’est moi, DJ Herbert, avec nary a full phrase of French in my dictionary, autre than une petite peu (sp?), but a complete understanding of fresh, preservative-free food that somehow doesn’t make you fat. I’m talking tons of baguettes and cheeses and foie gras and duck and creme brulee and red wine. Oh the red wine! You’ve never had wine till you have a Bordeaux. Nothing compares. There’s so much more to tell, so many pictures (I’m talking over 1,000!), but I’ll save it for a future book. I’ll just give you the skinny.

We started in London for a few nights, staying in the smallest room with the most lighting fixtures I’ve ever seen. I tried to photo them all, but couldn’t get’em all in 5 shots. We went all over London, saw many things and places and ate some really good food. I don’t know what they mean when they say British fare sucks. First of all, if you’re a tourist, British food = Indian food because nobody will tell you that Brit eateries close at 10:30PM. Only the Indian ones remain open, and that was okay with me. They were good as hell. If you get to a Brit spot in time, you’ll be treated to steak and ale pie, bangers and mash, fish and chips and this amazing dessert called bread and butter pudding. With cream. Off the hook.

All in all, I could live in London easily for a year or two.

Next was Paris via the Eurostar. Paris is a beautiful, magnificent, breathtaking city, but I don’t think I could live there. It was cheaper than London, and the streets felt safer (no one-laners with roaring double-decker buses zipping by), and the architecture and history is unparalleled, but, I don’t know. London just felt do-able. And mysterious. And more dance-ready. Paris radio played a lot of Black Eyed Peas, so no Visa for me. London music is the sh*t, plain and simple. Where else will you hear Colonel Abrams at the fu*king airport? Whoa. I cried.

Back to Paris. It was gorgeous, and amazing, but a better place to visit. I met some guy who said he missed living in New York. “Where did you live, exactly?” I asked. “Bedford Stuyvesent,” he replied. I almost choked. Here’s a full-blooded Parisian, born and raised, living in the most marvelous city in the world, saying he misses Bed Stuy.

“Never taking shorts cause Brooklyn’s the burough.”

In the end, I found France not in gay Paree, but in the countryside. In the Loire Valley, in Bordeaux, Saint-Emilion (the capital of wine country), Dordogne, on the Mediterranean, in the way the country men loved their food and family. It was awe-inspiring, moving, so enchanting, and I would urge all of you to rent a car and do a country-wide drive. Imagine a world built around religion instead of business. Where people seem to speeding not to work, but to dinner, to a warm baguette and a glass of wine with family and friends. One more thing about the wine: It has layers. When you sip wine you bought in the store in NYC, it may taste good, not be too offensive, go down smooth, all that. And then, after a few seconds, it goes away. When you sip a Bordeaux, it stays on your couch for a few nights. It warms, delights, plays, enriches, intrigues … I know I sound like a big dork but I can’t stop thinking about those God damn Bordeauxs eses!

I’m back now for sure. I was walking down 5th Avenue yesterday, shopping for my baby’s birthday (she deserves an extra big one this year, because the trip was entirely her idea, her planning, and it was incredible), and I passed Aberzombie and Fitch. They were playing some rap music, though African American culture has little to do with the brand, but whatever. So does everybody else. What struck me was what I saw inside. A kid, just standing there, posing, with his shirt off, with a 6-pack stomach. It was completely ridiculous. Absurd. “Yup,” I said. “Back home indeed.” I felt like running in there and taking off my shirt and standing next to him. You think you’re bad ass with a 6 pack? Check out my party ball, bi*ch!!!

My wife made a good point: At least they’re making men do it now, too.

I gotta go because I’m back in the Rat Race, NYC being the home course, but I promise to hold on to some of that joie de vivre (sp?) that I got from my trip. Big shout out to DJ Cosi, my good friend and FREEDOM booth partner, who has just released an AWESOME 2-set CD collection of lover’s rock reggae. I listened to them 4 times each while driving in France and I’m in love!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE TO BUY THEM. DOPE. I love this kind of reggae, and you do too. DJCOSI@HOTMAIL.COM!!

Also respect to the Deadly Dragon Crew for helping FREEDOM get a plug in the Japanese magazine. And big up to my FREEDOM FAMILY. I love you. Let’s have some wine.

Cheers,

DJ Herbert
