Word To Herbert
We all know how crazy New York City can be. Everything races by at top speed. The people, the buildings, all zipping past like you are in a taxi cab cruising at 90 mph up the West Side Highway. You don’t have time to say “hello,” “goodbye” or even “thank-you.” There’s no time to catch up with that old friend, no time to check out that exhibit you’ve been trying to see, no time finish reading that book you started almost a year ago. So many things left undone because here, in this town, money comes first. As long as you punched out, you did everything you had to. And since most of us are working ridiculous shifts, overtimes, maybe even 2 and 3 jobs, punching out is the only thing we have time to do. Then we go home.

We don’t even have time to eat. We order Chinese, or Mexican, or some $13 meal we could have bought in the store for $5. AND we could have eaten 5 times as much of it! All because we don’t have time to go food shopping. What? Who does that? What for? We don’t even have time to cook! You’ve given up even trying to go food shopping, because what happens? All the stuff you buy goes BAD. That’s right. You know I’m talking to you. The fruit you were excited to buy cuz it made you feel health-conscious is now … mush. The vegetables you giddily picked from the cold aisle orchard at the store are now growing their own vegetables–the furry white kind. You even bought yourself some sliced turkey because you were going to bring your lunch to work. Ha! “Bring your lunch to work!” You know you did! (Were those brown paper lunch bags on your receipt??) Now you’re throwing out rotten meat you certainly didn’t buy marbled.

Then there’s a few of us, like me, who even forget to CHEW! Do you know I heard on the Food Network that you’re supposed to chew each bite of food 30 times? 30 times??? Who has time to chew 30 times? I maybe chew 1/3 of that. Maybe. If your grandma took out her dentures and gum-sucked her food she’d have it broken down better than I ever could. I just chew, chew, chew, chew chew chew chew chew and maybe chew a couple times more and then gulp. And I take big bites. I finish my food FAST, boy. I’m telling you. It all can’t be good for me. I mean, I get frequent stomach aches, gas (both ends, to be honest, unfortunately for the wife and DJ Cosi in the booth … and poor innocent bystanders on the subway, but hey, it’s the 3 person rule–if you have 3 people sitting next to each other, 1 of the 3 can bust arse because if it were 2, one of you knows he or she didn’t fart) and generally I over-eat because I haven’t given my hypothalamus a freaking chance to register that there’s food in my dang mouth!

So I’m slowing down. I’m going to count to 30 each time I put a piece of food in my mouth. If you see me eating at Country House Diner on Fulton Street, or at Le Basket on Broadway and 3rd, or at Castro’s on Myrtle, try to leave me alone. If you talk to me, you’ll mess up my count and I’ll have to start over and probably choke on the food that is now liquid and spilling down my throat.

PS — Freedom was off the heezy. We played songs we dun NEVER played, and it was a great night. I wish the venue would get its renovation plans approved already, so we could give you more space and take this party to outer space, but, you know how the government be.
