Word To Herbert
The power of music is unquestionable. I’m telling you. I was at the gas station, paying my $56 to fill the 4-door (impeach Bush), and they had Sean Paul’s track “Temperature” banging in the garage. These dudes were covered in grease and hard work but they were getting down like they were in the VIP section at Lotus. Then I started to hear another song, and though it wasn’t loud and didn’t have the live video accompanying it, it was still … deafening.

The gas station attendant was singing something in another language, possibly the tongue of his birthplace, some incredibly emotional, heart-wrenching ballad about maybe life and love and longing and even when I turned my attention back to the garage, all I could hear was his song. I looked back and saw him staring off into the distance, watching the sun go down over the Clock Tower on Flatbush, lost in his thoughts. Maybe about a girl he had to leave at home to come make a life for himself in a new country, or a family, a loving wife and three adorable, chubby little wide-eyed children, waiting for daddy’s pay check so they can drink fresh water. It was so sad, so beautiful! I started to cry.

Alright. So maybe I was feeling a little emotional, alright? Maybe I got a little carried away. He could have been singing an Ashanti song, imagining himself on a beach in a thong for all I know. So what! Whatever. His song was beautiful and enchanting and I’m thankful he was singing it loud enough so I could hear it.

Now … what’s up with all these house remix records coming out with faulty production? Like Leela James’ “My Joy” house mix on Shelter records. The vocals sound like crap. Something to do with “time stretching.” It sounds awful. I can’t imagine real house deejays being able to play it, it sounds so bad. Fix it. Get your sh*t right.

Big up to Jon Moskowitz, the guy who did “Blue Eyes Meets Bed-Stuy,” that Frank Sinatra VS Frank White mashup CD. He’s got another one out called “Purple Reign,” a Prince VS Dipset mashup thing, and it’s pretty cool. Now, y’all know I’m not a fan of the mashup trend, and I think it’s pretty wack most of the time when DJs do it. Anyone can take an instrumental from one song and throw a random acapella from another song over it. And I mean ANYONE. (Which is why I like “re-mixes” and “re-works” a lot better, like the Gamm Records stuff.) Sometimes, however, it works, like with the Rub and their CDs, with Jon Moskowitz and his CDs, and with this cat DJ Chachi and some of his songs, and this other crew who puts out these mashups and party breaks in yellow sleeves who I forget right now. They did this really pretty mashup of Omarion’s “Touch” with Amerie’s “Touch.” I still play it.

Oh yeah. And DJ Soul’s mashups. I like them too, but I’ll get to that. Big shout to Michelle Timmons at Vibe for hitting me off with the CD.

Last thing. PHARRELL: PLEASE STOP RAPPING. You have the ILLEST song I’ve heard on the radio in a while. The beat is crazy, it’s an experience, a production, with Acts and Scenes and even an Intermission it’s so dope, but then you start rapping and RUIN the track and I can’t play it, at least not your verse. I’ll have to remix it or do something else, but unless the original jumps off at real NYC parties, I won’t even be able to fu*k with it at all except early in the evening. (DJ Soul did an ILL remix of your last one, but I really couldn’t get it off cuz you rapped on it and messed it up.) Please don’t take this personally, or get mad at the Herbster. It’s my advice, it’s outta love and respect for the ridiculously good music you make. I can’t hear you talk about your “Liberace” fingers and hanging out with Puffy ever again. We all know you are talented–we love your beats. You changed the game completely and you get mad respect for that. We all know you are wealthy–see above. We also all know that you are NOT an MC, so for the love of God, CHILL … And let me rock your songs.
