What’s In Your Deck #18

My Top 5 Music Picks
1. Bilal – “You’re All I Need”/”Make Me Over”
Pretty much everything I’ve heard by this man is on point. I like the fact that he’s comfortable with his voice and uses it accordingly.
http://www.myspace.com/bilaloliver

2. Raheem DeVaughn – “You”
It’s just a beautiful song all around. The lyrics, vibe, melody and mood. It just is.
http://www.myspace.com/devaughnenterprises

3. Ghostface Killah – Fishscales
This is arguably the best Ghostface album to date. Every song including the interludes is entertaining.
http://www.myspace.com/ghostface

4. E-40 – My Ghetto Report Card
This one surprised me. E-40’s the lingo king, lol. If you’re into this type of music you won’t be disappointed. Tight beats and rhymes from beginning to end.
http://www.myspace.com/E40

5. Little Brother w/ DJ Drama – “Separate But Equal”
These dudes are better than your average rappers. I love their honesty. They’re living proof that the south does have real mc’s and they don’t have to rap about their rapsheets, whips, or dips to have hot music. But don’t complain about it… Support good music!

    1. Beck “Guero”
I carry no Beck baggage, never thought he was all that compelling as a “rapper” in the 90’s and that loser shit I thought was tres YT but this album is great, dust brothers production and an appropriately dark and maudlin new american blues vibe. the mexifornia strain running through is right on time “ayy I saw Puppet at Tangs with a mullett and a popsicle”

    2. Gnarls Barkely “St. Elsewhere”
Like a fresh vegetable. 3 or 4 of these don’t work at all but those that do are amazing and crisp like a good tomato or uuh “tomatoe”. This fool is rapping about feng sheui and the irony of his girlfriend loving him AND fucking him all the time. Smartest most daring thing since love below/speakerboxx. The New black bohemia out the south?

    3. The story of Jamaican Music Tougher than Tough Disc 3
Gregory Issacs, lots of lovers rock, “Joggin” shouting out addidas sneakers and the “nah-sock” preparing to conquer music.

    4. My Morning Jacket “Z”
counterintuitive; smart southern rock, freebird + 808’s and dusted production. embarrisingly earnest and appropriately dramatic

    5. Nada Surf “The weight is a gift”
grown folk music. Look at that title! Responsibilities in rock and roll…My 2 year old sings the chorus to “all is love” and ya its that corny and straight ahead beautiful. Enough to warm even my cold black heart.

    Singles?

Stefon Harris and Blackout - Thanks for the Beautiful Land on the Delta (a Duke Ellington classic) The chord breaks on this song is nuts…

Bilal Oliver - All For Love
I love the music, the guitar and the lyrics were written for me

Earth Wind and Fire - Fantasy
Lyrics, arrangement, just a hopeful song to hear

    Ibrahim Ferrer - Bruca Manigua
Wouldn’t you want your man to serenade you with this song

    Kindred - Rhythm of Life
Intense groove and lyrics, long song a little over 5min, gives you a lot to chew but leaves you satisfied.

    1. Wally Sparks - Southern Conference mixtape feat. Ludacris

Lovin the Shawnna/Luda “Gettin Some” rmx
Playaz Circle feat. 8ball “Bitch Chill” has replaced Maceo’s “Hoe Sit Down” as the best STFU anthem

    2. J.Period - The Best of Lauryn Hill vol. 1 and 2.

it’s from last year, but the remixes (Fugee La Global remix) and rare cuts (Manifest) are priceless

    3. GLC & A-Trak - Drive Slow Mixtape

Honor Me is probably my favorite cut but Haterville is dope, and the GLC remixes of Three 6 Mafia and Eightball & MJG cuts blend Chicago with the South nicely indeed…

    4. Wally Sparks feat Chamillionaire - Texas Militia mixtape vol. 1

I’m from the A– but YOU CAN’T SLEEP ON TEXAS!!!
Both versions of Front and Back are on here, as well as the Chamillionaire “Ridin Dirty” remix — which I think is nice lil modern nod to N.W.A. (them boys love to catch us ridin dirty)

    5. Lupe Fiasco — the only reason it’s at the bottom of the list is because Lupe’s release date for Food & Liquor is not til June… nonetheless I’m listening to some real gems right now — the kid is WAY outside the box and “Kick, Push” is just the tip of the iceberg

    1. Phyllis Hyman - Living All Alone (I love this lady - no homo)
    2. Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
    3. The Pointer Sisters - Automatic (RIP June Pointer)
    4. Eska - The Melody Lingers On
    5. Sade - War of the Hearts

770…I got that J. Period joint!! It is very well put together. Made me like L. Boogie again!

Ruth Pointer sang lead for “Automatic”. She also sang lead for “Neutron Dance”.

    Pointer Sisters Bio

Here is an excerpt from the Bio:

Alas, the title of their 1983 album summed up exactly what the trio was about to do: Break Out. Upon its release, Stereo Review called the new album “the Pointer Sisters at their sassiest, brassiest, up-tempo best.” When Ruth took the lead for “Automatic,” her deeper-than-deep vocals practically leapt off the vinyl, and helped the single go all the way to #5. The Pointer Sisters landed all over MTV, becoming one of the first black acts to be played in heavy rotation. “Jump(for my love)” raced to #3 on the pop charts. “I’m So Excited” hit the Top 10 and became a Pointer classic! To date, the song has been played over 2.5 million times on radio. “Neutron Dance,” featuring Ruth’s gospel-spiked shouts, rose to #6 on the pop charts as its video dominated MTV. Paramount Pictures included the hit in their film, Beverly Hills Cop, starring Eddie Murphy. Finally, Break Out spawned a sixth single, “Baby Come And Get It.” The success of the album earned the sisters two Grammy Awards (Best Vocal by a Duo or Group for “Jump” and Best Vocal Arrangement for “Automatic”) and two American Music Awards. Break Out was certified triple-platinum, making it the biggest selling album of the Pointer Sisters’ career.

uh uh…don’t scare me like that no more!

    1. Muscle Cars- E40. This is the best song on a mediocre album. The town goes stupid to this one. Another classic from Rick Rock.
    2. The Infamous- Mobb Deep. I think that is the name, whatever the video they got on BET uncut. That song feels like NY 1994. Reminds me of some grimy Wutang shit. Better yet it reminds me of Mobb Deep circa 1994.
    3. “Get of my hair go” -Bilial. I don’t know the name of the song but dam is it addictive. I love the new albums. He makes Sa-Ra sound good. His version of “Hollywood” is killin.
    4. Love Me Right- Goapele. Dam that song is sexy as hell. reminds me of Hey Ya. This is definitley another side of Goapele I haven’t heard.
    5. Bumpin my music - Ray Cash. It reminds me that good lyrics with a new soun work well together. I really like the video as well. Best Jonathan Mannion viedo yet.
    6. Twilight Zone- Lupe Fiasco. He is killing that track. Reminds me of Spice 1 song “187 proof”.
    7. Ya da da mean -The A’z. This song is ridiculous. Another out of control song form the bay. “Hit it oonce hit it tweese”… “Red ope one coke”…. Produced by this cat out of the Bay Bedrock. That kid got heat.
    8. Vans - Da Wolfpack. This song is the Lafy Tafy of the Bay. The first group to rep Berkeley California. Get your Vans on and got stupid to this one.
