Word To Herbert

Warning: My email distribution has been wacky. MSN and Hotmail addresses are not being successfuly transmitted for some reason. My company’s working on it now.—

I really have to give it up to Kenaar, Joo-lee-to and the whole crew at Corner51. I mean, they took over this random, 2-floor Irish drinking lounge in Midtown, on the East Side, the white boy capital of the planet, and freaking CRUSHED it with one of the illest hip-hop crowds I’ve ever played for. All the way up in freaking bumblefu*k, IN THE POURING RAIN, we were packed. TREY SONGZ was there, prolly hating Herbert because I didn’t play his record (I do like the song a lot, but it just wasn’t the right time), and legendary hip-hop mc superstar AZ was there with his peoples, and they stayed almost all night. Big up to BABY PAUL, too!

Crazy. I’m downright proud to be a part of it. Herbert would like to officially thank the Hood for welcoming me and making me feel at home and allowing me to fill their Saturday night with incredible sounds. Todah Rabah!

Of course, Freedom was packed AGAIN (yeah, Joe, what!!!). This past week we had a really nice crowd, a good mix, and Cosi tore it down while I did the MC thing. I know I’m not that great on the mic, but at least I’m better than Francois K!!!
Probably the only thing in the booth I can do better than him, though. He was down-right EVIL on Monday night at Cielo, their weekly party that pulls a funky mix of Euros (blame the neighborhood), yuppies, House heads, lofters and dancers. I mean … he was a mad scientist. The dance floor was his petrie dish where bodies danced and wriggle like excited strands of chromosome. THOUGH he didn’t seem to be actually working any pitches to match beats, though it seemed his laptop did it all except for sound effects and selection (I’m telling you, I didn’t even see the CD players going OR vinyl for that matter, which still has me a little perturbed; I think he just selected the BPMs to blend via his laptop), he still crushed it and did so in a way that made me fall in love with music all over again.

Who cares how you do that, I guess? Right? I don’t know. I’m confused. Help.

Big up to Benny Soto for the comp and the Corona (with grenadine, biotch!!). Big up to Bruce Tantum, too, and Joann Jimenez of Alma, and Manchild Black at the door.

Last but not least, I am getting an increase in numbers of sleazebag emails looking for the “next biggest star” or “hot actresses” or America’s “hottest new supermodel.” Ladies … let me help you out with this one here. If you see these emails, or these ads in the back of the Village Voice, or even in Backstage … IT IS A CROCK OF SH*T. It’s some fuc*ing scumbag trying to get laid. NO LIE. Do not be fooled by these monsters. You are just going to end up with photos of yourself on websites where horny dudes go to … you know … beat up their little brothers.

Okay?

Good health, true happiness,

DJ Herbert

PS — And then this electro kid came on who everyone’s talking about, and he did the same thing! No pitch blending! No manual speed adjustment. Just entering in the correct BPM or whatever into his computer and letting it do all the work. How much of the art is lost when there’s really no challenge of “live” beat matching involved? I don’t know. Now ANYONE can do it. Your grandma can set her BPMS digitally, and she doesn’t even have to have rhythm! At least with the Serrato laptop program, you still have to be on point with your blends! Somebody hit me back with your thoughts, please. I’m losing my mind here!

Message DJ Herbert and tell him what you think
