Word To Herbert
Sorry, but as long as rap sucks, as long as this brief time period lasts where Lil’ Bow Wow is #1 on the radio, I’m probably going to be spending more time with house music. I mean, no disrespect at all, and I like some of his music, but it angers me to no end when a song like that is reportedly #1. In NYC? You must be crazy. Do you think we’re fu*king stupid? I mean, c’mon????? I start thinking yet again about politics, and money, and I know full well that the song’s throne will only run last till the last check goes through to you know who, but … still. It just gets me, you know? Music is my passion, is my sanctuary, my little neck of the woods that I go to for peace, for understanding, for remembering who I am and not who I am supposed to be, and I will not stand for someone coming in and …building a Starbucks, you know? Enough already.

Let’s keep it moving.

If you saw “Hustle and Flow,” and you thought it was good, there’s something wrong with you. I felt like that movie was made for white people who think old school is Jay-Z’s third album. “Ohhhh. So that’s how they do it. They go from a pimp and drug dealer to a rap star, but not before doing the jail time, of course.” It was too easy. And at times, ridiculous. The main dude, I forget his name, is INCREDIBLE in general, no doubt. He did a good job in this one, in “Crash,” and in the other ones I forget. Of course, the fat guy from this movie I forget his name too, but he’s on “The Shield” and he was in “Romeo Must Die”) is REALLY GOOD. I think he’s gonna get the Oscar soon, too. But, I mean, like, that moment where the prostitutes go from … being screamed on and beat and treated like animals too being … a vital part of the production experience? Like, one second you’re punching them in the face, and the next they’re smiling and really feeling your work and you’re supposed to believe in them as characters and then you almost do until they’re given the important job of turning on and off the fan.

Was it completely misogynistic, a parody, or a heartfelt drama? Uh … it sucked.

Speaking of “suck,” the fact that we have nowhere to go on Saturdays for the time being really sucks. DON’T WORRY: We’re on it full time. We will have a place by April without question. We got teams scouring the city for the next big place. We thought about Stereo … HAHAHAHAHA. Sike! (I had to–more and more stories are coming out about that place. It’s CRAZY.) But we will be partying hard again Saturday nights real soon. Of course, you can make your way down to Freedom every Friday. We’re ALWAYS packed. We’re ALWAYS number one.

“Weeeeeeee are the champions, my friends. And weeeee’ll keep on fightiing, till the end …”

Last, thank you for your feeback. I got lots. And I got lots of work to do now, but thank you very much. I”ll get back to you guys with the overall results. Now, please understand one thing about my listings. I list events that feature good musical talent, be it djs or live musicians. Then, I also might give a chance to parties with musical talent I’ve never heard of IF I think they sound interesting and I’ve heard of the promotional team behind them. Of course, if I’ve actually been somewhere, I’ll really sign off on it. BUT … I never EVER EVER know if an event that I DO NO PERSONALLY WORK ON will go down the way it’s supposed to. For instance, DJ Take 5, a great DJ and passionate music collector, was playing for a party in a hotel in Times Square. It looked cool, it was for a movie, I knew the music would be great, and the space itself wasn’t an oft-visited destination. I mean … they have a pool by the bar! Cool, right?

When I got there, I found myself smack-dab in the middle of a party full a lots a half naked homosexuals. Now, I have no problem with homosexuals at all (everyone needs lovin’ and how you get it is your business, unless you get it from animals and then you definitely need help) but, well, they were half naked, about to go swimming, and it was elbow-to-elbow. Sorry, but I felt a wee bit uncomfortable. That doesn’t qualify me as homophobic, so don’t even try it. That’s not fair. I mean, give me some room to breathe. Let me go to the bar and get a drink for my wife without rubbing against skin. What had happened was the upper lounge where the party was became “private,” and they roped off the lower section where some guy was having his birthday party, and the invite must’ve said clothes optional or something.

Anyways, ALWAYS call the place before you go. Make sure everything’s cool.

Peace, love, light, understanding,

DJ Herbert
