The Herbert Hollar

Family:
You know I never start off the Holler with an editorial ‘less I got me a good reason. Well, today, I have that reason. It’s name is Stereo. Stereo is a new lounge occupying 512 West 29th Street, formerly Coral Room, in the oh-so-trendy Chelsea garage district. A Hollerer, a supporter of Herbert and frequent NYC party-goer and tastemaker coordinated a big birthday at Stereo a few weeks ago. Unfortunately for her, she failed to WARN Stereo that her crowd was brown and black and all colors in between except white. After arranging car services for all of her guests due to the blizzard, she arrived only to see them all standing in front, even though Stereo had the birthday list and knew the deal and should not have kept them out in the snow.

Then what happened was pretty darn awful.

Stereo decided, after seeing the racial make-up of their group, to DISHONOR the birthday reservation. They said instead of having to buy 3-5 bottles for 40 or so people, she would now have to buy 30 BOTTLES!!! She obviously couldn’t do that, so she promised to pay door cover for all of her guests so she could AT LEAST get them out of the snow. They said okay, but they would ONLY ACCEPT CASH from their group while WHITE PEOPLE WERE USING CREDIT CARDS ALL THE WHILE! Eventually, they not only flat out refused entry and left them outside in a blizzard, but the door girl (whose name I’ll tell you if you email and ask for it–I’ve been in the biz too long not to oblige her wackness) and her door staff TEASED and RIDICULED the guests as they left.

Whoa.

The birthday people were well-dressed, all professional and had good jobs (the birthday girl herself is a lawyer), and I personally KNOW and have entertained at least half of them many times before–I know that they’re good folks. Their only mistake was being Black, Latino and Indian.

Currently, there is a lawsuit pending. Personally, I hope they get it hard. It’s enough already! These places, these people, who come to our city to cash in on it’s excitement have the nerve, the audacity, to disrespect its people, its foundation. I mean, honestly, how the f*ck are you gonna discriminate and keep black people out when you’re going to the bank on BLACK MUSIC????? Kids with lots of money and little class want 50 Cent, but they don’t want anything to do with Curtis Jackson, nah mean?

STAY TUNED…

Whoa! How many parties this week? Please make an effort to try something NEW.

Thanks for the support last week at Freedom. It was off the hook. The expansion is coming soon. We’s about to take it to the next level. Big shout out to all my dancers, my drinkers, my lovers, all 400 Freedom regulars who come week after week to embrace unity, love, spirit, good people and down-to-earth fun. No drama, no pretensions, no fronting (no future in that), nobody telling you NO (unless you are 1 of 5 guys in a group trying to get in at 2 in the AM–then HELLL NO!!).

I swear to always provide events that go a little against-the-grain, that make you feel like you are in the best city in the world.

I WANT TO BRING BACK THE UNDERGROUND! WHO’S WITH ME?

    Family:

Once again, you know I don’t start off with my thoughts unless I need to. Now, I need to. Make sure you scroll down when you’re finished reading to see this weekend’s events. Okay? Heeeeeere we go!

I got Part II here of this Stereo stuff. I thought it necessary to speak with the proprietors of Stereo themselves, so I can properly understand both sides of the this story and do my full duty as a “writer” reporting on this situation. Herbert can’t have … Herbert being a hypocrite now, can he? I mean, can I? Can them? (What?) You know what I mean! I feel that in order to be legit, in order to maintain the prestige and respect that I undoubtedly have garnered these last 5
years of giving you the Holler, I gotta tell it from the other side. I apologize for getting a bit angry, but, you know, it beez like that sometimes. I WILL NOT GIVE OUT ANYONE’S NAME. The only thing I’m going to give you is the full scoop.

Opening up a club in NYC these days is CRAZY. State laws are crazy, city codes are crazy, landlords are crazy, leases are crazy. If you try to open up a lounge, a club, a restaurant, if you try to do something “entrepreneurial” in order to feed your family and climb the heights of success, you prolly SHOULDN’T. There are so many chips stacked against you. Besides the above-mentioned linesmen that stand in your way, you have neighbors who don’t/won’t want you, a city that’ll make you wish you stayed in New Jersey (born and raised, biotches!), and … oh
yeah … opening expenses that’ll run you around $300,000: security deposit, construction, liquor license, lawyers, permits, architects, supplies and other various equipment (check this week’s NY Magazine). Then we get into your monthly costs. Rent is roughly $15,000 a month, staffing will be $10,000 a month, insurance around $700, liquor around $10,000 to $15,000 a month, for a grand total of around $50,000 a month. (”Hello … dad? Hi. I just saw this awesome space I’d like to rent. How much? Only 50 … thousand … per month.”)

The folks brave enough to go the distance have their work cut out for them. They have to somehow garner as much publicity as they possibly can JUST TO BREAK EVEN. Then, if enough celebrities and journalists and Page 6 write-ups and fashion shows and P Diddy appearances have come their way, they can then start looking torwards making some money through cover charge and opening up their doors to a wider audience. But not until Page 6 stops caring and the Hiltons start telling their friends “it’s so wack, yo.”

How do you get Page 6 and the celebrities there? By enforcing a strict door code. By “reserving the right to refuse entrance to anyone.” By playing a hard game of door politics and making sure your crowd always looks “right.” Beautiful or not, fashionable or not, even sometimes rich or not, it doesn’t matter. If you get turned away, you’ll never know why and they don’t have to tell you. Like trying to pass a co-op board: Legally, they don’t have to say why you cannot move in. (THEN HERBERT GOES AND FINDS YOU SOMETHING BETTER. BUYING OR SELLING?? HOLLER!!!) They can’t afford to do it any other way. How hard is it to open up a dance club
where you can just have everyone come down and dance the night away? Ridiculously hard. How hard is it to get a cabaret license so people can LEGALLY dance and you can avoid dealing with police EVERY night? Almost impossible.

    What is Herbert’s conclusion?

Let’s see. Stereo does indeed let people of color into their establishment, so I can’t really fairly say that they’re racist. I don’t know them. Is the door girl a jerk? Maybe, I might bet on it, but not because I know her or have been treated like a jerk by her before (I don’t bother going to those kinds of places because I usually only have about $10 and a Metrocard in my wallet), but because people at the door can have that potential. Were they being a bunch of a-holes? Yeah, probably, but I wasn’t there and can’t say who said what. Were they abusing their priveledges at the door via an uncouth manner of selection? Maybe. But I guess they can and will.

I do know for sure that the b-day reservations were made prior to the evening and confirmed with the people in charge. I do know that it was a blizzard outside. I do know that the club made it extremely hard for them to get in, only to kick them all out when it looked like they finally might be able to buy a darn drink. And I do know that the birthday girl ended up in tears after inviting so many people down and even calling them cars so they wouldn’t have to trek in the snow, only to have them waiting in the snow for almost 1 hour and treated poorly. And yes, unfortunately, I do know that the door staff did tease the patrons as they left.

Herbert believes Stereo was wrong. Given the circumstances, they should’ve let those people in and deaded the club’s politicos for one night. That’s my opinion and I’m confident in it. It was a bad decision on Stereo’s part which may lead to problems for them in the near future. Herbert hopes not, because Herbert hopes that everybody “lives” in this world. I wish nothing but the best for both Stereo and the people who didn’t get in.

Coincidentally, I know a lil’ somethin’ about politics myself. I’m running for mayor next year. VOTE FOR HERBERT!

    Peace, love, understanding and FREEDOM,

    Herbert

PS — Afterthoughts (and then to bed with this thing): It’s not about white, it’s not about black, brown or even high-yellow like my homie DJ Marc Smooth from Costa Rica. It’s about GREEN. Plain and simple. In the nasty world of clubs where everyone wants you to go back to your office job, GREEN rules the day. GREEN gets you by. GREEN makes the most sense. Knowing this, party people have to be as discerning as possible when choosing where to plan on letting loose. You all must know these places exist. It’s your choice whether to give them your money or not.

    Herbert
Just want to get the facts straight. The B-day girl Madhu Goel had a hard time for one reason not because of race or color but because of being cheap. You can’t go to any club in the city with 40 people and expect them to get in for free and just buy 3 bottles. Her group refused to pay the cover charge. They were are welcome to come in and were brought in out the snow. Once they refused to pay then they were asked to leave. No one was ever teased. Madul’s group starting protesting outside like a bunch of children because they were to cheap to pay the $20 cover. If you want to go to a high end celebrity style of club like stereo you should have some money in your pocket otherwise have your b-day party at a local bar with beer specials. The reason Stereo is such a success and such a hot place is because it doesn’t let in people like you Herbert.

Actually, I was at Stereo with a friend of mine who was invited to the party and I don’t even know the birthday girl, but I know she’s a high powered attorney and not cheap at all. What my friend told me was that the birthday girl had made arrangements with the Events Manager to have her party there and was told she only had to purchase 3 bottles. Once the party got there, Stereo demanded she buy 10 bottles or her guests had to stand in the snow!! They wouldn’t even let her boyfriend in! The Events Manager apparently stuck up for the birthday girl and told the owners/manager/? that she had agreed that only 3 bottles had to be purchased, but the owners/managers said that the Events Manager didn’t know what she was talking about and all deals were off. Then, the birthday girl actually offered to pay the cover for all her guests, and offered her debit card to do so but Stereo demanded cash only - unable to come up with the $1000 in cash, and not wanting to ask her guests to pay, in 27 inches of snow and in the middle of a blizzard the poor girl, her family, and all her out of town guests were kicked out on her 30th birthday. Sort of sucks, really. Who knows if it was racially charged, and Stereo is a lot of fun, but that still is an awful thing to do to someone.
