What’s In Your Deck #13

My Top 5 Music Picks
As you’ve noticed, I listen to everything. My life is music without limitations. Whatever i’m feeling or going through will be reflected in my selections. Some songs will be selected off content, others on melodies, some vibes and moods or beats and vocals and others, all of the above. Some songs will be new, some will be old, some will be different, but the one thing they will all have in common is… good. When people ask me what I listen to, instead of giving them a massive list of vast variety, I simply tell them… good music! I Love Music… just as long as it’s groovin’!

Joy

1. Stevie Wonder–Talking Book
When talking about Stevie, with so many great albums in his collection, it’s hard to narrow it down to a favorite. But for a true fan, this one is always in the running. Every song on this album is a classic in my eyes. “Maybe Your Baby,” “Tuesday Heartbreak,” “You Got It Bad Girl” and “Blame it on the Sun” are a few of my favorites.

2. Isaac Hayes–Black Moses Part 1 and 2
I never understood why older woman had a thing for Isaac Hayes until I heard this album. He’s not the most physically attractive man, but this man just exudes sexuality (and the deep voice doesn’t hurt). It’s very rare for an artist to make a double album and all the songs are good. The first disc starts out with his renditions of “Never Can Say Goodbye” and ends with “Going In Circles.” The second starts with “Never Gonna Give You Up” and ends with “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.” Although most of my favorites are remakes, he definitely makes them his own.

3. Marvin Gaye–Let’s Get It On
Although “Let’s Get It On” is the most talked about song from this album, ironically it’s my least favorite. I usually skip it and go straight to “Please Stay (Once You Go Away).” This is a very romantic and personal album where you can feel his heart. When you hear songs like “If I Die Tonight” and “Just To Keep You Satisfied,” you’ll understand.

4. Minnie Riperton–Perfect Angel
She had such an amazing voice. It’s sad she died so early in her life, but I’m glad she blessed us with this beautiful album before she left. “Loving You,” produced by her husband/producer Richard Rudolph, was the breakout song for her and although I do like that one, my favorites are “Take a Little Trip” and the title cut, “Perfect Angel.” Both were produced by Stevie Wonder who I think utilized her voice better by gradually going from her natural voice to the high, opera like notes, unlike Rudolph.

5. Carole King–Tapestry
This is just a wonderful album. From what I’m told she had albums before this one, but this was the one that made her a superstar. From the beginning with “I Feel the Earth Move,” then “So Far Away” (my personal favorite), then “It’s Too Late,” it’s easy to see why.

Bonus: Van Hunt–”Down In Hell With You”/”Seconds Of Pleasure”
When I first heard this song (and “Seconds Of Pleasure”), I listened to it over and over and over again. I can’t say the entire album is comparable, but these 2 songs made it worth it. “Down In Hell” just has a tight smooth mid-tempo groove and “Seconds” has a sexy blues vibe that’s undeniable.

funny you say that about Van Hunt. I couldn’t get into the album last year when I got it. I tried listening to it over and over again… just couldn’t get with it. So, I gave it away… recently I heard seconds of pleasure again I’m really feeling it. I wish he would have come with some real heat on the album though.

Unfortunately, I have to agree. When a friend first played the album for me, I thought it was horrible. I couldn’t believe the hype around him. But last week my co-worker had it, so I gave it another try and low and behold, I love those 2 songs! It’s one other song on the album that’s ok as well, but that’s about it!

Esthero-Wikked Lil Grrrls album: Just listen to the song We R In Need of a musical revolution and you’ll be hooked (yes, that’s R Kelly she’s dissing at the end among a few others.)

Little Brother-The Minstrel Show: So the editor at the Source just resigned because he wanted to give this album a 4.5 and David Mays and Benzino said no. shit is that good…

I Wayne- Lava Ground album: Top notch Roots & Culture music straight from yard,

Zion I-True & Livin’ album: Bay Area duo pleases hip-hop fans with meaningful lyrics and boom bap beats. sorry, no lil boozy’s or young cheezy’s here…
yea, some of us are actually sick of the ignorant down south rap running the airwaves right now, we want to hear something more than rims, hoes, murder and crack/cocaine trafficking….

AZ-A.W.O.L. album-NYC stand up. AZ promises to help put NYC hardcore rap back on the map and he makes an awesome effort. if the Premo produced “the come up” hasn’t caught your attention yet, then look out for “New York” ft. Ghostface and Raekwon. This is for those who have recently been dumbed down so much by Hot 97 and BET that they’ve forgotten the essence to all dope hip-hop is tight beats and great rhymes (yes rhymes! we still check for rhymes, just because Dipset uses the same word to make their verses rhyme, does not make them great rappers by any means…)

I did promo work for Van Hunts albumherein Europe so I had to listen to it over and over again. I am impressed with his “range” although I must admit it was all the hype around him that turned me off initially. These days I am listening to Missy Elliot’s “Cookbook…” to get into a physical/hyper mode (good to work out to) and Mariah Carey featuring Snoop and Pharell “Say something” to feel buttery and warm. As far as albums go, I am listening to 1999 by Prince for some good ole nostalgia and “Comfort Woman” by Me’shell N’degocello(?) in attempts to prolong that summer feeling. Sundays are for Al Green (just about anything) and Carmen McCrae. Peace!!!
