Word To Herbert
I can’t help but think too much about the current state of hip-hop affairs. Gone are the beloved days of Black Moon, real rhymes, and MCs who wouldn’t be caught dead in a button-down or a blazer (God bless them). This we know and have come to accept. The new age of rap ain’t that bad, really. Besides the messages and the unfortunate fashion trends that have sent purists packing for Amsterdam and Germany, today’s hip-hop is just as powerful and dance-worthy. I’m not mad at the new beats I hear, nor what affect they have on today’s “hip-hop” crowd. A crowd that has grown to the billions.
So, if everyone today is listening to hip-hop, why are hip-hop parties still SO segregated? Why can’t I find a good hip-hop party with a healthy mix of black and white? It’s almost like we’ve gone all this way, come this far, but we haven’t really gone ANYWHERE. You either have your Supper Clubs, your Etoiles and your LQs, or you have your Quos, Marquees and Glos. There is no single hip-hop party that can rightfully claim a true mix of people, a real 50/50 or 33/33/33. They can’t even advertise 30/70 for crying out loud!
I think I may know why, too. It’s because of the music itself. Hip-hop music is responsible for the continued proliferation of segregation in our music culture. And it’s right there in the song itself. Today’s most popular artists–say, for example, 50 Cent, Jay-Z and Game–rap about, for the most part, drug dealing, gun slinging, ghetto survival and girls with extra-large bottoms. There’s at least something uttered every other sentence that can be grouped beneath one of the mentioned categories. Now, take your average white boy. What do you think happens when somebody hears him singing these lyrics? When someone sees him talking about the “gat on his hip,” the “20 in his fist” or the “ghetto big booty bi*ch” he just “hit?” What do you think happens when he HIMSELF hears what he’s saying, stops and thinks about it?
Wait a minute. He doesn’t have a gun. Never did. He doesn’t sell weed. Never did. And he’s never been to the ghetto NOR has he ever had sex with a woman who could “make it clap” it was so damn big. Right. So he knows he’s kind of … fronting, and they know it too. But he loves hip-hop. He loves the beat and the underlying message of struggle, hustling and surviving and standing strong in the face of your enemies and not giving a damn about who says what. It’s the most addictive sound out there. Now … where can he go to hear it? If he goes to a real hip-hop party, he’ll feel uncomfortable. Everyone knows he doesn’t belong, and not just because of his color, but because he’s singing songs he has NO idea about and can’t rightfully claim as his own. So he’ll go to NA to get his hip-hop on. It’s much more safe that way. Or a Roots concert or a Common show or a De La event.
Ever been? 50/50.
Back in the day, it was easier being a “wigger.” Rappers talked about partying and dancing more so than gang-banging. You could sit at the black kid’s table at lunch time and talk about Kwame and Chubb Rock and Def Jef and Young MC because you weren’t fronting about nothin’. You liked to have fun and dance. Today, it’s a lot harder. The craziest thing is … it’s even harder for black individuals, now! Whoa. If breeding ignorance and segregation of races wasn’t enough, it’s now making it harder for the very people who invented it! How could that be?
It’s simple. Back in the mid-’90s, Herbert was one of the only white kids in the room at a “hot” party. An underground dance hall playing hip-hop and reggae and classics, a grittier sound than the rock and rave stuff that was all over the place. At one time, there might have been … five white dudes in the spot at most. For real. And at least one of those five was responsible for the party itself (you know who you are!). Now, with the proliferation of hip-hop parties and the unfortunate side effects of segregation, you’ll have “hot” parties (what our society deems as “hot,” mind you, which is mostly high-incomes and high fashion) with almost all white folk. There might be … 10 black dudes in a room full of 300 white folks at one time, and they really only hit the floor when it’s time to show the white folk how to properly “row the boat.” You don’t believe me? Head down to the MeatPacking District. Stop in Lotus, stop in Aer, check out Hiro then tell me what you think.
Why can’t we all just rock together?
Can hip-hop be to blame? Is it the power players in the industry that aren’t listening to their social conscious and stepping up to use their new-found resources to help bring us closer to the end of racism? You know, the same people that … ahem … put Lil’ Bow Wow’s music at NUMBER ONE on the charts in NYC? Since when is Lil’ Bow Wow a NYC favorite? When have I ever been asked to play Bow Wow at an NYC party? I’ll tell you. NEVER. I wonder who’s taking the wife and kids to eat at Alain Ducasse tonight. Yes, people. Racism is still here. Alive and kicking. And it ain’t going nowhere. Not for black folk, not for Asian folk, not even for white folk. Do you know that yesterday I went to the deli on the corner and bought a big thing of Tropicana and was charged $.50 extra? I know how much it costs, I’ve seen what he charges the non-white customers, and I called him out on it. The manager came out and apologized and said “he didn’t know.” BULLSH*T! Crazy, right? I’m sure the big Jewish nose didn’t help me out any.
Okay. Feel free to hit me back about this stuff.
Real quick: Freeodom was OFF THE HOOK last Friday. GRANDMASTER D of WHODINI came through and blessed us with a little JAM MASTER JAY turntable tribute, and ROCWILDER came by again to show his support. Saturday at BLVD was packed again as well. And Thursday at Lotus gets bigger and better every week. We’ve REALLY turned the beat around and changed the once-corny crowd for the better (Tim, Josh, IRT, kudos!). Come thru! If you missed Thursday, you missed SWIZZ BEATS on the 1s and 2s!
Peace, love, life, health, understanding, knowledge,
Herbert
