Crusade Entrepreneurs #14: Gail Phillip
Sweet G a.k.a. Gail Phillip
What’s your 9-5? What’s your 5-9?
My 9-5 is in the Sales Department at a Major TV Network.
My 5-9 is co-owner of an artist management company, Reach Records Management. My partner, former Baby Blue Soundcrew member Kid Kut, and I were nominated for Manager of the Year 2004 at the Canadian Urban Music Awards.
When did you start? How did you get your start?
I first got my feet wet in entertainment working in the Sales and Events/Promotion department at various television stations eight years ago. I started out in the urban music scene as a volunteer in various capacities. I took on the volunteer roles of Production Assistant for the Canadian Urban Music Awards (CUMA), Talent Coordinator for National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment (NABFEME) and became a member of Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ). As G-Note Entertainment, I worked with a few promoters as Event Coordinator for celebrity parties, which included FUBU, 112 and Jagged Edge.
Why choose this particular career/industry?
I love music and believe that there is so much talent in Canada that’s overlooked and slept on. If I can help these artists get the exposure they need and assist in putting Canadian urban music on the map, I will be satisfied.
Is/was education important in achieving your goals?
Somewhat. I found that a lot of the volunteer work that I did helped increase my knowledge and networking with and picking the brains of veterans in the music scene have also assisted in my growth.
What are some of your weaknesses and strengths?
Weaknesses: Truly a work-a-holic. I work all day every day. Not good for an assistant that wants a break once in a while.
Strengths: Great leader, strong team player, resourceful, hard worker and very detail oriented.
What qualities are needed to survive in your career? In your industry?
Great people skills. Perseverance and a lot of patience.
What makes you unique?
I don’t forget anyone that I come in contact with.
What advice do you have for those interested in your career? In your industry?
Be ready to work hard to achieve your goals. There are a lot of snakes in this business so please beware and don’t be naive. This business isn’t for the faint hearted.
Words to live by? Motto?
Don’t let ANYONE tell you that you can’t do it. It’s never too late to achieve your personal goals.
