Crusade Entrepreneurs #8: Khalilah Rahemm
Socialb77 a.k.a Khalilah Rahemm
What’s your 9-5?
Executive Assistant at Banc of America Securities.
What’s your 5-9?
I began shooting footage for a DVD documentary on the NYC nightlife scene last year. It is not finished as yet but is still in the works. I have also begun having thoughts of writing a book.
When did you start?
I started in the entertainment industry in summer 1998, straight out of college. I started out as intern in the promotions department, learned the ins and outs of the street team, radio and mixtape promotions, and retail. I was hired after 6 months of interning and worked there until 2001. After that, I began working at Def Jam from 2001-2004. Currently, I am working in the finance industry.
How did you get your start?
I met Shan da Butcha who was one of the original members of the street team. We became really cool and one day I mentioned that I needed an internship in order to graduate and the rest was history…
Why choose this particular career/industry?
I think as a child, I was always a free spirit and social butterfly and never wanted a traditional job. I have always thought “OUT OF THE BOX” and what better field to work in than the music industry. I was always intrigued by videos and learning the ins and outs and behind the scenes.
Is/was education important in achieving your goals?
Education is important in achieving my goals. I began to get discouraged at one point when I realized how few executives and successful people in the music industry have degrees. People are making six figures and haven’t ever stepped foot in a college. The field is dominated by who you know and not what degree you have. However, I soon realized that no matter what, it’s an accomplishment in itself to have a degree (s) and the more education you have, the more opportunities are presented and the more money you can make.
What are some of your weaknesses and strengths?
My weaknesses is being a procrastinator and worrying too much. I think I make things much more difficult than they have to be at times. My strengths are I am extremely opinionated and have a great personality and am comfortable in my own skin!
What qualities are needed to survive in your career? In your industry?
In the music industry, I found the simplest thing to do is treat others the way you want to be treated because you NEVER know when you will need someone or have to call a favor in. I think it is a must to not get caught up in the gossip and the pitfalls that present themselves. Working in the finance industry, I have found that you need to have a tough skin because it is an extremely cold industry.
What makes you unique?
I think my life experiences are what make me unique. No matter what challenges life has presented to me, I have managed to make lemons out of lemonade.
What advice do you have for those interested in your career? In your industry?
I suggest you work extremely hard and speak your mind and be mindful of how you conduct yourself because you never know who is watching! Also to seize the moment at all times because that could be your BIG BREAK!
Words to live by?
To whom much is given, much is required.

Hey Khalilah,
Wow, The last time I saw you, I was interning at the same place where you were working in promotions. We went to High School together. Its so great to see you doing your thing. Its awesome that you are putting together a DVD on NY Night life. I’ve done some party promoting and planning in the last few years and have quite a few connects (Which I’m sure you do too), not to mention I went to college for Media Arts( Radio TV and Film),with concentration in Video and film production. So if by any chance you need some assistance , I would be more than happy to help! I am also working as an Execuive Assistant in Finance, Cantor Fitzgerald (eSpeed). Email me, I would love to here from you. Cahyia@yahoo.com. Peace Claudia
